Where & When
About The Show
In February of 1969, members of the Redstockings, a second-wave feminist group, disrupted a New York legislative hearing about abortion. The New York Joint Legislature Committee on the Problems of Public Health had called the hearing to consider reforms to New York's abortion laws, then 86 years old. The Redstockings objected to the hearing because the "expert" panelists were a dozen men and a Catholic nun.
The following month, they held their own panel discussion, allowing women who had actually had abortions to testify as the "true experts." Now, 50 years later, we present the transcript of that event as a staged reading. Join us and listen in on these women from varied walks of life as they speak openly, eloquently, and truthfully about seeking an abortion in the years before Roe v. Wade.
